Dear Lazyweb > USB Repair in Knoxville?

Dear Lazyweb,

Where can I get a USB port repaired in Knoxville, preferably for less than the price of a new inkjet printer? It looks like the USB cable got pulled to the side on the HP. Now printing doesn't work and the USB port on the printer is muy wobbly.

Unless it's a very expensive inkjet, I bet you can't. Heck, it's frequently cheaper to buy a whole new printer than to buy ink; it's hard to imagine anyone cracking the case and soldering in a new usb port for less than $50.

You can do this yourself! Believe!

Get a USB extension cable online, or find a device or cable that already has what you're looking for.

The leads to a USB cable are color coded, and you can just match them up. Unless the port is directly connected to a board, in which case things get trickier.

Open up the printer and take a look-see. The repair probably won't be pretty, but it should work. I've done lots of such repairs and modifications without solder, using tape and wire nuts. USB cables are pretty forgiving.

Email me if you have questions...

I never would have thought to try fixing it myself, but I'll give it a shot. If I can't fix it myself I'll drag it to the Radio Shack. The guys there are pretty friendly and might show me a thing or two. Thanks.
