When I worked for the park service I was stationed in Cosby Campground in the cabin next to the amphitheater. Another nice, but longer hike out of there is to take Low Gap to the Appalachian Trail. From there you can go south to Cosby Knob Shelter, or north to the Tolkienesque Mt. Cammerer firetower. Here's a trip report for both.
