Does Your Pee Stink When You Eat Asparagus?
Uh, no. Why would my pee stink when I eat asparagus?
Yes. My pee stinks when I eat asparagus.
I don't eat asparagus.
I don't pee.

Here's something that came up in conversation at Father's Day dinner when several of us ordered asparagus. Asparagus causes some people's urine to smell. Did you know that? Did you want to know that?

Researchers Allison and McWhirter found that about 40% of the people in their study produced no odor even after eating as much as a pound of asparagus. If you said "my pee doesn't eat after eating asparagus" you could be in that group, dubbed "non-excretors."

On the other hand, it's also possible you're an excretor (your pee stinks after munching asparagus), but you can't smell it. It appears that some people are incapable of smelling the chemicals involved. How do we know this? Researchers collected urine samples and asked subjects to smell the samples. The subjects reported asparagus stink pee even in people who swore their pee didn't stink.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions. I noticed that most scientists are reluctant to ascribe the ability to make and then smell the odor to genetics (but what else could explain it?). There's also confusion as to the exact chemical that causes the smell. Early studies fingered methyl mercaptan, but newer studies say it got a bum rap.

Gas chromatography of the urine has shown that the odour could be caused by S-methyl-thioacrylate and S-methyl-3- (methylthio)thiopropionate,7 while a combination of methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulphide, and small amounts of sulphur-oxidised compounds could also be responsible.8 The source of these metabolites is unknown, but the last paper postulates asparagusic acid, which is specific to asparagus and, when given to humans, causes the same characteristic smell in the urine.

Bonus! - Asparagus stink pee rockin' fun zone:

  • The smell isn't found in the plant itself. The plant has sulfur-containing chemicals that are converted in the body to malodorous compounds.
  • The ability to detect the smell diminishes with age starting at about age 35.
  • Younger asparagus has more of the foundation chemicals than older asparagus.
  • In nature, the foundation chemicals are believed to protect the plant against fungus.

I checked that my pee smelled when I ate asparagus but simply by default.

You see, you really are missing the one other possible choice - My Pee Stinks All The Time.

So, whether I eat asparagus or not, my pee stinks.

Bonus Pop Culture Reference:

In the movie "Wolf", Jack Nichelson is standing at a urinal next to an annoying guy, then turns to pee on him. He grins his JN grin and says "asparagus" in that wise-ass way of his.

I don't want to know how you people are smelling your pee. I'm usually standing too far away from mine.

Thib: if you have asparagus pee, you don't have to put your nose in it. You'll smell it at the usual distance. :-)

Gotta chime in with my favorite Aggie joke. An Aggie and a teasip (that is, a Univ Texas Student) both end up at the urinals during a ATM/UT game. The teasip finsishes, zips up, and starts washing his hands at the sink. The Aggie finishes, zips up, and heads to the door. The teasip comments, "At UT they teach us to wash our hands after pissing." The Aggie responds, " At A&M we learn not to piss on our hands."

Someone once told me that it had to do with being dehydrated, or something about the kidneys.

Then again, this person also didn't know what I was talking about at first, so maybe they were just in "know-it-all" mode or something, having to have an intelligent sounding response to hide the fact that they were clueless to begin with.

Though, I have noticed that my pee smells less bad after eating asparagus when I've had a lot of water that day, and it smells stronger if I haven't had a lot of water or sweated a lot that day. So maybe there's something to it?

and thibodeaux, you know your shit stinks, right? If you do know that, I will not accuse you of sticking your nose in your shit.

Smells carry, you don't have to rub your nose in something to smell it, and if you do, you should have that looked at.

We eat asparagus all the time and I have always noticed an odor, but I usually steam my asparagus. But after trying a new way of preparing it by brushing with olive oil and sprinkling with salt and pepper then roasting it in the oven for 15 mins. there was no odor to my urine. So, does the preparation alter or change the occurance of the odor? Not really sure on that.

I've become an asparagus nut over the past little while, but alas, everytime I enjoy it my piss smells like... plastic. Thats the best way to describe it, that awful plastic smell. It must be the sulfur.

Ummm. Everyone has the smelly pee after
eating Asparagus. Yes, Everyone.

But . . . Not Everyone can Smell it!

Mine has this heavy metalic smell, much
like if you smelled a lead fishing sinker.

I often wondered what the hell caused that and
sometimes thought something might be wrong with
my kidney's or liver.

Then, one day on a stroll in the woods with my Dad,
He starts to gag and says "Holy shit a skunk is nearby, don't you smell it?"
I sniffed the air and instantly recognized it, I replied, "Yea, I smell something, but it's not entirely bad, in fact my piss sometimes smells just like that!"

He stops gaggin and gives me the "Have you gone insane?" look.

I forgot all about it until the other day my piss smelled like lead, again.
I again feared a medical condition because my mom
was recently diagnosed (like a week ago) with cancer. So this time I started searching the internet, and I found all this great information
and I can now prove to my dad that I'm
not insane.

Just because you can't smell it, doesn't mean your piss doesn't stink!

I was a bit dehydrated after eating the aspar soup. Damn nasty stank. I normally don't eat the stuff and now I have one more reason to avoid it. Glad to read it's common and not my kidneys shutting down.
