East Tennessee > Friday Bird Blogging - Pileated Woodpeckers

2006-06-17-Townsend-0029.JPG

Taken near the horse stables in Cades Cove during last weekend's trip to the Smokies. I went to look for a wild turkey I glimpsed and found these pileated woodpeckers foraging for woodpecker vittles. Near the end of the video you can see one bird feeding the other behind the tree.

This next is a short video of one of the birds pecking at a log.

P.S. I think these are young pileateds. They seem a little small. Compare them to the mature birds at Pileated Woodpecker Central. The crest on these birds is more of a teardrop shape. On the older birds it's narrower and more angular.

Nice! What device did you use to record the video? I would like to delve into moving talkies (or pecking) some day.

Thanks! I used the movie mode on a Panasonic Lumix FZ5. The movie mode is actually considered one of the weaker features on that camera. Its replacement, the FZ7, is supposed to be a big improvement as far as video.

I've actually got a nice Panasonic 3 CCD digital camcorder. I rarely use it because it's bulkier, doesn't take good stills, and takes more work to transfer video to the computer. It mostly does birthday party and holiday duty for the kidlings and family.
