Home Life > Katie Day 703 - First Potty by Herself

We've been slowly coaxing Katie to the potty chair since Christmas. Today for the first time she used the potty chair without any encouragement or help. Big day.

A few weeks ago Katie learned how to climb out of her crib. Last night we must have put her back in her crib a dozen times. We eventually let her sleep with us. We're going to need some new tricks for getting her to bed. Outsmarting a 23 month old is harder than I would have guessed.

From my advice here:

'Last week, Junior graduated to the toddler bed after trying to climb out of her crib. Now, at night, she’s not railed in. This worked well for about, oh, three days. Then she decided she’d sneak into our bed in the middle of the night and tell us we needed to wake up. And, there was the issue that we had to shut the dog door at night for fear she’d wonder out. Then, genius idea: I turned her door knob around so that it locks from the outside, which keeps her locked in her room.'

And Jay G's advice:

'IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: Leave one of the pin-key thingies somewhere in the room. Otherwise Junior WILL lock the door with you in her room at least once, and you’ll have to climb out the window and shinny down the farmer’s porch.'

After I got your comment I picked up a screwdriver and reversed the lock. It worked! Thanks.

Picking up some keys sounds like a good idea. The only thing I've found in the entire house that's small enough to fit into those pinholes is one side of the tweezers of a Leatherman Micra. We keep it on a shelf in the hall for just that purpose.

If you have any of those childproofing things for doorknobs, you can also just put one of those on the inside knob on her room. That's what we do with Jr.'s room.

Our inside doorhandles are the lever type, so we can't use those, unfortunately.
