Star Wars > Han and Luke's Resumes

So in the scroll at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back they mention that Luke is leading the rebel forces. And of course Han is a general. Do you really think the rebellion gave them those positions just because they blew up the Death Star?

Me neither. I'm guessing there was some major resume padding going on there. That could be comedy gold. Which reminds me - I need to get together with Bugly and cobble together that ninja's resume we talked about.

There are two quotes from the movies that should explaine that right away...

"The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded. You will find it a powerful ally."
-- Obi-Wan Kenobi

"Don't underestimate the power of the force."
-- Darth Vader

You remember how Luke didn't go to the Academy and dropped out of Jedi training? I'm betting that's not how his resume reads.

I don't think it was resume padding so much as rank inflation. Sure, they called Han a general, but did you notice his entire command fit on one very small Imperial Shuttle? I figure that in a more standard military he would be a captian by courtesy because he has a ship.

Admittedly I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I seem to remember Skywalker being a commander. I'm not even sure if he was running his squadron.

Remember, this is a rebel army; they're not going to be handing out pay raises. If you do good, all they can give you is a medal and a fancy title. I imagine there's not a soul in their army below the rank of captain.

Yabbut they could have at least run a credit report. Then they would have known about Han's outstanding balance with Jabba the Hutt.

Resume padding?

Hah!

George Lucas is the *MOST* overrated writer, director, producer of the 20th century.

He defines "hack."

Perhaps Todd-A has another column to write...

Probably. I wish all the Star Wars movies had been as good as Empire Strikes Back, which is the one Lucas had the least to do with.

"Resume padding" in The Empire Strikes Back? I'd still like to know how in the first film Luke, despite never before having flown a starfighter, got to lead his three-ship strike element in the attack on the Death Star. Shouldn't Biggs or Wedge have taken the shot, while Luke acted as the wingman?

Not that there weren't plenty of other plot holes in the Star Wars films big enough to drive an Imperial-class Star Destroyer through. My favorite was how Obi-Wan Kenobi "hid" Luke and himself from the prying eyes of Darth Vader and the Empire by stashing Luke with Vader's own kin on Vader's home planet...and then moved in next door under the clever pseudonym of "Ben" Kenobi.

Oh well...you've still got to love the films. At least the original trilogy...
