A&E > Music by the Unemployed for the Unemployed

Jonathan Hickman is thinking about giving up weeknight shows:

I just can’t do it any more. No more seeing bands on Thursday nights.

Last night, they didn’t start until nearly 11. They were supposed to start at 10.

10 was too late.

We heard two songs and left.

I need a nap.

Dude, even when I was in college I couldn't understand why bands started so freakin' late on weeknights. And if the poster says the show starts at 10:00, that means the warm-up band won't start until 11:00. The main act won't plug in guitars until the a.m.

Well, to coin a phrase, "Don't quit your day job."

Ha! Good way to put it. I always hated that too and I'm a "night person". After kids came along my wife and I would go to see a favorite band in a smokey bar filled to beyond capacity 4 hours before the headline band was to play. At 2 AM, after the first song we'd yawn and scream "I THINK WE SHOULD GO" and buy their cd on the way out. It must have been more fun when we were 21 and could sleep until noon the next day.

Amen! What is the point of having bands start late? I went to a show on Saturday and I had to wait around until nearly midnight to find out that "Llama Train" sucks. I could have been at home instead! Of course they always start even later than they are supposed to. Pat of it is us. I mean Knoxville. In the college days I used to marvel at how a club would go from empty to full between midnight and 1AM. Might be a good marketing plan for some venue. "Music starts promptly at 8PM. After dinner. So you can be home at a reasonable hour."
