Home Life > The Absolute Truth About Bathrobes and Pajamas

Jonathan Hickman is bathrobe blogging.

So I've probably been less happy with bathrobes and PJs than any other sort of mundane, everyday thing. I think it's because I kept asking for them for Christmas presents - they were sort of in the category of dumb, unessential presents to me for a long time - and I always hated what I got.

That wasn't the fault of the people who bought them for me. I was just sort of blasé about what I wanted because I didn't think I had any preferences.

Now I realize how incredibly damned picky I am about robes and PJs. The first thing is that I want them to be very, very lightweight so I don't overheat. And of course when you ask for them at Christmas you get these walking blankets made from flannel or terrycloth that are too hot to wear 10.8 months out of the year.

The other thing I'm really uptight about is having PJs with matching tops and bottoms. I don't mean matching in the sense that they <bunnyquote>go together</bunnyquote>. I want them to be made from the exact same same bolt of fabric. Anything else is just wrong, OK? Every time you wear pajama tops and bottoms that aren't made of the same material, a crime against nature has been committed. God told me to tell you so.

I'm also not entirely sure about any color but blue for men's pajamas. God said he'd get back to me on that one.

Seriously, I have no idea why I have these hangups. I didn't use to think I did. But now that I've faced my inner sleepwear-related demons I've bought myself a cheap pair of Haynes lightweight navy PJs and I'm finally happy.

Ever since they were invented, I reckon.
