East Tennessee > Tennessee Courthouse Photos

The round clocktower on the Dyer courthouse is unusual. I've been fond of the Cheatham courthouse ever since I saw this post by Mark Rose, who has the better picture. Those pyramid dormers are incredible. The Henry courthouse looks like it might be even more impressive in person, and I've always been a fan of the Sevier courthouse. If you're ever in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge and get tired of the tourist traps, go to downtown Sevierville. It's nice, and there's a little museum there.

The site doesn't mention it, but the Rhea courthouse was the site of one of the most famous trials in history and houses a museum to same.

Trivia on the Blount and Washington courthouses. Melissa and I got our marriage license in Blount County, and got married in Washington County (Jonesborough, to be exact). We filled out our paperwork in Blount and wandered around the courthouse waiting for the confirmation to come back from Nashville. The wait was extended by the fact that the power had gone out . That was a Bad Sign. We were going to Manhattan for our honeymoon, and just a few days before New York City had suffered an enormous blackout. Luckily, power was restored by the time we got there.

Anyway, while we were wandering we found a display on the courthouse's history. The current courthouse just off of downtown was built after the previous two downtown courthouses burned. The new design won a national award. Shortly after that the Washington County courthouse burned, and they asked Blount if they could re-use their basic design, which is why the courthouses are so similar.
