Tech > Sub-compact Car Dangers

From Wired's Autopia:

According to tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Hyundai Accent, Scion xB, and the Toyota Yaris (without optional side airbags) do poorly in side crash tests, while the Honda Fit, Chevy Aveo, and Hyundia Accent all rated poor in the rear crash test.

The statistics reinforce the test data, as the IIHS says the death rates in collisions and single car crashes are much higher than in midsize cars. The small cars don't fare well in the side crash tests that emulate a collision with an SUV where impact would be about head level on the small cars. But of course when it comes to getting behind the wheel, we shouldn't care about anyone else, should we?

My wife was in a head-on collision a few years back. She was in a Toyota Highlander (med. sized SUV) and the other guy was in a Cherokee. He swerved into her lane from behind a slowing car.

The construction and size of the Highlander saved her from serious injury with the exception of a broken rib.

She won't own a compact car.
