A&E > Firefly

I finished watching the "Firefly" box set. What a great show, and what a total bummer that it was canceled after one season.

I really wanted to find out more about Shepherd Book. There were hints throughout the series that he wasn't what he appeared to be. For a preacher he knew way too much about crime and weapons. When the crew takes him to an Alliance hospital to save his life his ID gains him VIP treatment all out of proportion to his status as a wandering clergyman. In the final episode bounty hunter Jubal Early tell Simon Tam flat out "He ain't no Shepherd."

I saw the movie, Serenity, before I ever saw the TV show. Now I want to re-watch the movie, which wraps up some of the story lines. In surfing around I found there's a comic book, Those Left Behind, that bridges the TV series to the movie. Anything else I should pick up, Browncoats?

If you like sci-fi even a little bit and haven't seen "Firefly" pick up the box set. At $25 for all 14 TV episodes it's a screaming bargain. This is the only DVD set I've ever bought that I thought was under-priced. If you know me IRL and want to borrow it just give a yell.

Trivia bonus - The real Jubal Early was a Confederate general and an ancestor of actor Nathan Fillion (Firefly's Mal Reynolds).

You are going to be disappointed rewatching the movie. I too wanted to know what the secret was, and there is a point in the movie when Mel and Book are talking and Mel says something to which Book replies.

BOOK: "I haven't always been a Shepard"

MEL: "You'll have to tell me about that sometime."

(Pause)

BOOK: "No I don't"

And that was it. I think that was Joss telling us he has no plans to explain Book's background.

Welcome to the cause.

First, you want to get all the podcasts of The Signal and Firefly Talk. Then, get Done the Impossible (www.donetheimpossible.com). You also need Firefly: The Official Companion, Vol. 1 and Serenity, The Official Visual Companion. Oh yeah, you also need the soundtracks from the show and the movie.

After all that, you're ready to join the discussion boards and spend whatever remains of your time there. And make some time for any local shindigs that may occur.

You know, I said "Welcome to the Cause" earlier. Maybe I should have said "Welcome to the Insanity". But it's a fun crazy.

The signs were all there, Book used to be an operative.
