Guns > "H.R. 1022: To reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes"

H.R. 1022 has been introduced in committee.

From The High Road, where there's lots of discussion and political fingerpointing. Examples:

"Well, all you folks who voted for anyone but a republican now know what the next 2-10 years are going to be like. Maybe longer."

Which was countered by:

"Plus, even if it does pass, all you good Republicans have nothing to worry about because your President will veto it, right? Remember, you guys all said Bush was just playing politics when he said he would sign a new AWB. You guys don't think you are wrong now, do you? Do you?"

Yep. Bush said in the 2004 election that he would sign the AWB renewal if it came across his desk. At the time, he was confident of a Republican Congress keeping that from happening. What could possiblie go wrong? The 2006 elections went wrong, Democrats now control both houses of Congress, and Bush's words are coming back to haunt gunowners.

Still, Bush and a Republican Congress were very good for gunowners. The AWB was allowed to expire in 2004, and the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms act protects gun companies from frivolous lawsuits that were threatening to destroy them.

This renewal probably won't go through, but another one might after the next election. This is exactly why I'm only buying semi-autos between now and the end of 2008. Just in case. If anything is banned it will be semi-automatics. And if they aren't banned outright they will be regulated - as in the 1994 AWB - with regards to magazine capacities of more than 10 rounds and "evil" features like collapsible/folding stocks and flash hiders.

LATER: In comments, Heartless Libertarian suggests .50 BMG rifles as something even more likely to be banned. SayUncle suggests buying suppressors while you still can. Kim du Toit is considering selling his non-semi-autos to fund semi-autos. All of those things have crossed my mind, too.

Sigh. So now the price of semi-autos goes up. and high-capacity magazines. and probably ammo, too.

Semis, and/or .50s. Don't forget the Fiftys.

Posted by: Heartless Libertarian at February 14, 2007

The Yugo 59/66 SKS I bought at a gunshow two years ago is selling for $200+ at last month's gunshow.

HL: Yep. If you've got money to invest .50 calibers are the thing to buy right now. They're already banned in California.

Move along now

Nothing to see here.

This bill is going exactly no where. I swear, its as if the monkeys on the high road never took a basic high school government class.

At this juncture, the Brady Bunch is about as welcome on the hill as NAMBLA. Democrats won't touch them - or this issue - with a ten foot poll. They have tasted victory (by way of running more conservative candidates in red states) and are in no mood to risk upsetting their hold on power. Simply not going to happen as long as Pelosi, Reid, and Clinton see promising 2008 numbers if they hold off now.

Heck, McCarthy couldn't even muster a single co-sponsor of the bill (original, as the days roll on I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of others sign on as co-sponsors so to get the benefit of supporting this bill without taking the heat of when its publicity is the greatest).

Frankly, I'd be (and am) much more worried about Republicans on gun control these days than Dems. Republicans are still running around not sure what happened in November (its frightening and pathetic to watch every day) and wouldn't be surprised to see pathetic bigots like my former congressman (and noted fence sitter) Tom Davis jumping on any bill to ban guns as he seeks to position himself for a run for the US Senate (and his wife - a noted gun bigot herself - seeks to pass an AWB at the state level in Virginia in her zeal to be a state senator - its the reason why I am offerring free ad space to anyone running against these bigots).

Posted by: countertop at February 15, 2007

not to say, of course, that you should ever stop buying guns. Only I just don't see what the fuss is about.

Posted by: countertop at February 15, 2007

just another point to note - the other piece of bigoted legislation introduced in this congress so far HR 256, The Child Gun Safety and Gun Access Prevention Act of 2007, still has no co-sponsors aother than Shelia Jackson Lee, its original sponsor.

and it was introduced way back on January 5th.

Posted by: countertop at February 15, 2007

Top: Like I say, I don't think this one will pass, but it raises a flag. The anti-gun people are emboldened now that the Dems have a majority.

Posted by: Les Jones at February 15, 2007

Les,

Get your C&R License. You can get Yugo SKSs for $120 - $150 (very good to unissued condition), delivered right to your door.

Plus there's CZ-52s for under $150 delivered; Mosin Nagant rifles and Turkish Mausers all under $100 each...

And you save beaucoup bucks from places like MidwayUSA and Brownells because they give you the dealer pricing.

Best $30 I've ever spent...

Much was made, of course, about how "gun friendly" so many of the new moderate Democrats are. Of course, the new moderate Democrats aren't the ones running the party. For the most part, it's the same old Democrats in charge. They're calling the shots, and in most cases the newly-elected will vote along party lines.

No, I don't think the AWB will be back this time around. But if the Dems pick up more seats in 2008 and especially if they get the White House you can bet it will be a big issue for them.

Most people probably realize this and see these early efforts as laying the groundwork for the big push in 2009-2010.

Posted by: Murdoc at February 15, 2007

How is McCarthy being clumped into the "new moderate Democrat" group here, Murdoc? Or, if you're trying to say she's not in that group, but calling the shots, what evidence do you have? The fact that not even gun banning longtime extreme liberals have signed on, muchless the new moderates? That's hardly evidence that she has any control over them.

Les, McCarthy wasn't emboldened by the majority. She's introduced this before when the Dems didn't have a majority. She saw a press opportunity with the Philadelphia shooting.

Again, I'm not saying to completely ignore it and that there's not still a threat out there, but this particular introduction is no more than a photo op with a NY liberal who doesn't have much authority, but does have a history of randomly introducing the legislation.

SB 1022? Has the ghost of Bill Ruger returned?

I seem to remember that some folks were saying after the last elections that they didn't think the Dims would attempt anything of the such and even if they did it would probably be a couple of years away... I also seem to recall pointing out that Dims never pass up any and every opportunity to put forth more gun bans... and that I fully expected them to do it sooner rather than later... For the doubters out there... I TOLD YOU SO! Wake up folks this is only the tip of the iceberg, and thanks to some of you, We're riding on the Titanic. If there comes another AWB, it's not going away. There won't be any more NORMAL capacity magazines for your Glock, your Beretta, your Sig, your AR, or your AK every made again *at least not for you*. They may go so far as to limit capacity to 5 rounds on all firearms! Remember the crap magazines that were churned out right before the last one? No folding stocks, no pistol grips, high prices on all the pre-bans? And that's only if there's a grandfathering on this one! This would be a great first step to banning all assault style weapon ownership all together. The next logical step would be to ban all semi-autos. They'll use our own argument of "a semi is a semi...so if they're just as dangerous as the Assult weapons lets ban them too!" Then comes the handgun semi's... "they're just as dangerous and look how many people have been killed by them in comparison to those evil assult weapons we already banned." Then comes all revolvers and "high powered rifles" you know, the ones you hunt with, Bubba? It's all done in increments... Baby steps... Widdling away your rights... Ask the Brits. Ask The Aussies. Ask the Canadians. No let's just sit back while our Bill of Rights is torn to shreds little by little.

Yep I was one of those people that did say that the demos would do this a couple of year from now. Well I was wrong. I admit it. Now I'll be going to the store and sticking up on ammo and magazines. I think the next ten years are going to be hell for gun owners.

Posted by: infantry178bodybuilder at February 16, 2007

It will only be hell as long as we let it.
I belive it was Claire Wolf that said, "America is at an akward stage. Its too late to work within the system and too early to start shooting the bastards."

I belive it is moving much closer to the latter. The question is, how long do we wait to "start shooting the bastards" or in this case, at least start recalling them and trying them for treason against We The People? They get away with it because they think they have no ultimate accountability.

O'k here is how I see it...

Yes those who didn't vote with your guns...well I told you so. I think this bill is D.O.Awith the number of pro-gun dems in the house and particularly the Senate. If MIGHT make it out of the house but it'll die in the senate. However...

I'm not leaving anything to chance...

1) I'm writing letters ahead of time to my U.S. Rep and U.S. senator. fat chance it'll do any good with the Senators from washington but my Rep is a "B" rated Dem so making sure he thinks about the vote ahead of time is a priority.I'm doing this pro-actively and via regular mail. It is mre effective then e-mail, phone calls or fax...

2) I'm buying extra mags myself.

3) I'm gonna keep working to get pro-gun people elected. Unfortunately I'm in Blue state but ina red distict on the state level. Got news for yeah. Pro-gun almost always mean voting GOP. I know of people who sit there and bitch about new gun laws and other "liberal stuff" and then vote for democrats because "republicans are for the rich"..time to wake up guys.....if you care about your freedom

What can I say? I have never been much for politics but because of the proposed H.R 1022 bill I am changing my views. I can not understand how a faction of our government can stand up and praise our troops overseas for protecting our rights and freedom but want to take away those very rights from the people here at home that placed them in office.

I still believe in our government but we would be fools to relinquish our personal security to self righteous Democrats that have no idea what the real world is like. I would love to see any one of them walk the streets of Denver, Chicago, LA, Seattle, to name just a few cities after dark and in some cases in broad daylight and tells us they feel perfectly safe. At the very basic level, our own security depends on our own ability to protect ourselves.

I have to agree with Pat... I will stock up on mags for my RRA M4 and start looking at reloading my own .223 ammo seriously.

I really get so frustrated with all these threats and possabilities of our 2nd ammendment being limited yet further. Living in NY, already the Brady Bill is still in Affect, and unfortunatly will more than likely never be lifted. very frustrating to me especially, being a collecter and weekend target shooter. Assault weapons are just a hobby for me, and strictly that. These politicians have absolutely no right trying to determine what our briliant fourfathers meant by the "Right To Bear Arms" no where in that statement is anything mentioned about pistol grips, or bayonet lugs, seriously, who uses a bayonet lug????? that boggles my mind to think a bayonet lug is illegal, hell lets out law knives next, isnt that the logical thing to do??? so rediculous, so pointless, and so much frustration and agravation being generated in all of our minds. kiss your freedoms good bye...cause all politicians are crooked and dont know the diff. between a falsh supressor and a muzzle break, which there isnt! serves the same purpose however for some reason they left out muzzle breaks! Never give up ur guns boys, im burying mine if thats what if comes to....

Posted by: BlackWahl at May 05, 2007

This is another great case of politicians playing on false promises. If giving up my Bushmaster XM15 would make all crime go away It would be a reasonable sacrifice but last time I checked Crack has been illegal for a long time and see how well banning that stopped our country's drug problems.

Read seven post above mine...that guy said it right. It's commonly called incrementalism and officially it is known as "Fabian Socialism". Yup, socialism. We have now fulfilled Karl Mark's ten teirs of Communism, right here in the gold old United States of America. Welcome to the machine boys!

They will never stop trying to grab our guns from us, this is what they live for and they cannot have global government unless they disarm Americans. We are the only ones standing in the breach, dear friends. And I don't think we've done such a stellar job! When the time comes, when they send U.N troops from the Netherlands and Germany, Russia, etc. to take our guns by force, we'll got out not with a bang but with a whimper!

Just take a look what happened down in New Orleans. The military and the police went door to door and disarmed the public...during the one time when we really needed our guns, during a disaster!I think most people gave them up without so much as a bad word. I watched a video clip of some idiot giving his guns to the police and military, all the while bragging how his guns were so much better than what the guys that were disarming him had! What an idiot! Talk tough while you hand over the only thing keeping your nation free.

There were a decent amount of people who refused to give up there firearms and do you know what happened to them? Absolutely nothing! They stood their ground and told those jack-booted thugs to go to hell, and that's just what the thugs did, they went back to Washington! the whole Katrina thing was a psy-ops on the people of New Orleans and the people of America. They wanted to see what kind of respone they would get so when they decide to do it for real they'll have some idea what to expect.

For all you guys who think it can't ever happen in the United States...get your heads out of your asses and wake up! It may already be too late. Most of the people in this country are going to lie down like frightened dogs. Why do you think things like Waco and Ruby Ridge have happened? Our Government is sending us a message...and the message reads: Mess with us and we'll kill you and your family, even your children. And we don't even have any problem shooting your pregnant wife in the head! This is what our country has turned into...a bunch of heartless and brainwashed killers!

For those of you who still believe all of the propoganda...boy do you have a serious surprise in store. I do not envy the ignorant. Everyone keeps on electing the same old criminals, expecting things to change, yet knowing thorugh experience that they never do. that, my friends, is the definition of insanity...Doing the same old thing and expecting different results.

Don't fall for their false left/right Democrate/Republican conspiracy. They put on a show for us in front of the television, but behind closed doors they are smoking Cuban cigars and laughing at us. We're just cannon fodder for their wars, they don't give a damn about us or our children! the time to do something is right now, not next year or next week! Benjamin Franklin said, "Those who give up their freedom for security deserve neither Freedom or security!". Welcome to "Homeland Security" and "The Patriot Act" What blasphemy!

Coming to a concentration camp near you!

I oppose every gun control law because is liberal propaganda BS. Those same liberals worked to legalized illegal drugs and showing the French "we give up" maneuver because they believe it works. Not approving the 1994 AWB in 2004 is considered the best action that the Bush Administration ever did. Please sign the petition agains this bill beacuse is unconstitutional.

Is logical that Democrats have ulterior plans because they recieve money from anti-gun organizations to force people accept their opinions above the facts. They are forcing via media that single individuals are inmediately criminals for just owning guns. The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was a castatrophic failure because it never targeted crime, instead it abused the American people's rights. I'm a ge semi-automatic rifles and guns of military nature because I'm a member of the armed forces and a combat veteran. unowner and that doesn't make me a criminal. I live in a comunity where such bans are rejected and the crime rate is low. I havCalifornia, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Conneticut and Pensylvania, where they still support gun bans are the leading cities in the United States with the highest crime rate and that is an absolute fact. Because the Democratic Party promises are dubious and irresponsible, I will vote for Republican for the sake of myself and everyone I care. The general public opposess this new law because it will fail again and it will be nothing but another abuse to the American people. The NRA whose activities are sometimes questionable have the leading edge in defending the rights of the people and for what is happening, they are not only defending the second amendment but they are also defending the freedom of speech and religion as well. So in my opinion the NRA is indeed the real civil and constitutional rights defender in the United States. Remember they [democrats and liberals]branded all kind of weapons as assault weapons and they are trying to influence foreign laws into the United States. Those laws don't work here because we are gifted with more rights than any other country in the world. I keep my guns and no government will take them from me and no other law-abiding citizen.
