East Tennessee > Computer Repair Around Knoxville?

Melissa's laptop stopped powering up. The screen never comes on, and I don't hear the hard drive spinning.

I tried swapping the battery and power supply with my laptop (which is identical). I took it to Best Buy and the tech used an ampmeter and confirmed that power is coming across the power supply. He suggested it could be a bad connection between the power input and the motherboard.

BestBuy doesn't crack open computers for repair, so I need to take it somewhere.

Any suggestions for computer repair around Knoxville?

Catalyst IT on kingston pike is pretty good. I'm pretty sure they'd be able to open your laptop up. You may want to try opening it up yourself, it's actually not too difficult.

I honestly wouldn't suggest for the average person to try opening a laptop on their own. A desktop is one thing... but even with years of experience I still have to be extra cautious every time I disassemble a notebook computer.

Yep, Catalyst IT. Mark is the best in the area. If he can't fix it, no one can. And he will also tell you if he can't. His comapny hosts all my sites and even though I have a BS in CS and know a bit myself, he is the go to guy.

I've been around for 4 years longer than the place on Kingston Pike, which isn't actually a computer repair place --- they're a Temp Service. ;-)

Thanks for the recs, all.

Mark, it looks like I'll be giving you a ring. I ordered a new external backup drive on Saturday, so I may wait until that arrives in case we need something to backup the files to. I think the hard drive is OK, but you just never know.

Bubba: CompUSA might, but after BestBuy I decided to look for a full service computer repair center.

Incidentally, the guy at BestBuy was very helpful. He spent probably ten minutes on the computer and didn't charge me anything. I didn't even mention to him that I had bought the computer there. That's mighty good service.

Up to you ... I usually have them backed up here first, so there's something to go back to. Having extra hard drives on hand is requisite. ;-)

I don't run a "reinstall windows!" shop here. heh

Well, I finally got hold of the suspect notebook today at around 1:45PM. Started on it at 5PM. Took it apart ... found the culprit ... put it back together. Finished at 6PM.

Next? ;-)
