June 11, 2007Word of the Day > Word of the Day: WikigroaningWikigroaning - From Wiki as in Wikipedia and groaning as in disgust. Discovering that the Wikipedia entry for a trivial subject is longer and more detailed than the Wikipedia entry for a related, more serious subject. From SomethingAwful via jwz. The premise is quite simple. First, find a useful Wikipedia article that normal people might read. For example, the article called "Knight." Then, find a somehow similar article that is longer, but at the same time, useless to a very large fraction of the population. In this case, we'll go with "Jedi Knight." Open both of the links and compare the lengths of the two articles. Compare not only that, but how well concepts are explored, and the greater professionalism with which the longer article was likely created. Are you looking yet? Get a good, long look. Yeah. Yeeaaah, we know, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. (We're calling it Wikigroaning for a reason.) The next step is to find your own article pair and share it with your friends, who will usually look for their own pairs and you end up spending a good hour or two in a groaning arms race. The game ends after that, usually without any clear winners... but hey, it beats doing work. He has examples, but the fun part is finding your own. Here are a few of mine. In every pair the article on the right is longer than the article on the left. In fairness to Wikipedia I should mention that they have more information about this Napolean than this one. Wanna play? Random nitpick from a random nitpicker: Alvin York is World War One, not Two. Posted by: Mr. Bruce at June 11, 2007You're right. I was thinking it was Alvin York in WWII with an M2 Carbine, but that was Audey Murphy. York was WWI with a [disputed] rifle. I've read a couple of different accounts of whether it was 1 1903 Springfield or 1917 Enfield, etc. Corrected. Posted by: Les Jones at June 11, 2007Fraggle Rock wasn't on Nickelodeon, it was on HBO. Or, alternatively as I remember it, the Disney Channel. And it wasn't a cartoon, it was a Muppets show. Posted by: Alcibiades at June 12, 2007Fixed. Thanks.
