East Tennessee > Tennessee's Sales Tax on Food

Katherine Coble (guest-blogging at Nashville is Talking) has a roundup on the movement to reduce Tennessee's sales tax on food. Tennessee has had tax surpluses for a couple of years now.

The state tax on food is insane. Any candidate for governor that comes forward and promises to repeal the tax on food is a guaranteed winner. The next step after that is eliminating the tax on prescription non-prescription medicine.

But there isn't a tax on prescription medicine... or was that sarcasm?

When we moved from Illinois to Wisconsin, we found that the absence of a sales tax oon food made a noticeable difference in our standard of living.

It was nice meeting you last night, Les! I posted photos on my blog. :) Hope to see you again soon!

Arlene: sorry, meant non-prescription. (Though I have to admit it's more symbolic than anything. The projections I've seen are that it would save an average family something like $50 a year.)

Tish, nice meeting you, too. Once I went to your blog I realized who you are. I've been to your site through links at Mark's.

"Any candidate for governor that comes forward and promises to repeal the tax on food is a guaranteed" to push hard for a state income tax in their second term.
