Economics > Shock: Someone Convicted of Mortgage Fraud

Lying about income on mortgage applications is so widespread you'd be forgiven for not realizing it's a federal crime:

A Gatlinburg man pleaded guilty today in federal court to mortgage fraud charges.

Edward E. Healy, 34, admitted making false statements about his income on a residential loan application to Mountain National Bank.

U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Phillips set sentencing for Oct. 23. Healy could receive a sentence of up to 30 years and a $1 million fine.
