East Tennessee > 5.11 Deal at Greene Military

I had to go to the doc in a box last night, so afterwards I went down the street to Greene Military on Kingston Pike. They have a special on 5.11 pants, which Marko recommended. Buy a pair and get a 5.11 hat and t-shirt (size XL only) for free. Not a bad deal at all for $45, and the hat and t-shirt are nice.

Greene is about a block from Ray's ESG where we're having the blogger bash on Tuesday. They're open until 7:00, so you can go there before the bash, which starts at 7:00. Greene is in the same building as Rainbow West and the old Stefano's Pizza, cattycornered from the IHOP.

Incidentally, before there was 5.11 there was Royal Robbins, the clothing company founded by the British climber of the same name. He originally created pants and other gear for rock climbing. The 5.11 moniker is based on a system for rating rock climbs, in which 5.10 was once the most difficult rating. Before I knew what 5.11 was I knew about Royal Robbins from my backpacking days.

He was born in W. Virginia actually, and the family moved to CA when he was a little kid. He lives in Modesto now - did the first ascents on El Capitan, and the northwest face of Half Dome in Yosemite. So, "It goes to eleven!" predates Spinal Tap??
