Tech > FlashBlock Add-on for Firefox = Hells Yeah

The other day I linked to a site and mentioned that it had some amazingly obnoxious Flash ads. Paul Simer suggested the free FlashBlock add-on for Firefox.

I've used it for a week now and it's great. It blocks the Flash from playing, but leaves a rectangular outline and a stylized F logo in its place. If you want to watch the Flash program (and sooner or later you will - for one thing YouTube's video player is Flash-based) you can click the FlashBlock logo to view it. Great stuff. Since installing it I've been amazed to discover how many ads are Flash-based here in the futuristic year 2007.

I also remember recommending Adblock Plus in a comment months ago. Did you ever try it out? I reformatted a few weeks back and only kept my bookmarks file, not my plugins. I installed Adblock Plus, but not FlashBlock, and still haven't noticed any annoying flash-overs. Maybe Adblock is getting them?

Also, I believe it's possible to white-list a website under flashblock by right-clicking the little play button and selecting the appropriate option in the context menu. This way you don't have to do a lot of clicking if you are a YouTube junkie or, like me, enjoy HomeStarRunner.com

Yep, I installed it. I still get some popups, but not as many as I was getting before. I loves me some Firefox.
