November 27, 2007Home Life > Why Don't Kids Start School Earlier? This post reminded me of something that's been in my thoughts lately. Our oldest daughter turned three a couple of months ago. She already knows her ABCs and 123s. Yet she isn't scheduled to start 1st grade for almost three years. Why is that? Right now her mind is active and ready to learn. Just from going to a parents day out program twice a week she learns a new song every week. She repeats anything we teach her and tries to teach her baby sister. It feels like she's spinning her wheels. We're looking into reading primers and homeschool material. We're planning on starting her in Montessori in the spring or fall. Does anyone else think we wait too long to start kids in school? Posted by lesjones | TrackBackComments
It depends. Some kids are ready at 3 or so, but I have also seen kids that were not ready at 5 or 6. Unfortunately, the criteria is absolute age without regard for anything else. One size fits all. (not) Posted by: Dan at November 27, 2007Part of it is the differences in development, but can your daughter sit still long enough for a traditional educational environment? Does she have the endurance for it? That's largely why we wait, b/c with the task of herding 30+ students, its not like she can work at her own pace. Unfortunate, but true. Posted by: Toby Bianchi at November 27, 2007Dan: true. I just wish there was more flexibility. Good point about the sitting still, Toby. We're hoping the Montessori environment will be a good one for Katie. Posted by: Les Jones at November 27, 2007This is why my diocese offers two years of preschool, then kindegarten. Preschool isn't supposed to be somewhat educational daycare, it should be an actual learning environment. It's optional, so if a child isn't ready for it, they don't have to be there. Posted by: Chris Byrne at November 27, 2007A wait time of "never" wouldn't be long enough, unless you like homogenized children. I was schooled publicly and at home and I cannot express my disgust for the former in words. Posted by: Anonyimouse. at November 30, 2007Post a comment
