Tech > AT&T Quits Payphone Business

AT&T is phasing out their payphone business over the next year.

For a little while during my freshman year at UT my roommate and I didn't have a phone. We depended on the payphone at the corner of Clinch St. and 11th. I noticed a few years ago that payphone is gone now. I imagine that very few kids go to college without a cell phone these days.

I was in a similar situation for a while when I first started college. To make a call I had to walk down from my apartment to a creepy seedy parking lot with a bank of pay phones on one end. I'd call my parents, my girlfriend or whoever and the whole time I was talking I'd be looking over my shoulder. Nuts.

So I used to have to go to a lonely parking lot to use the phone. Now you carry a phone in case you're in a lonely parking lot.

It's history now but I suppose the loneliest pay phone in the world was the one in the middle of the Mojave desert. Read the story of how a guy kept calling it until one day ... dunt dunt daaahh... somebody answered!
