E-commerce > How to Get a Person on the UPS 800 Number Phone Menu

When you call 800-742-5877 it's hard to get a person on the phone. I just found out you can press the * key to get a live person. The first time you press * the phone menu will tell you that you've entered an invalid response. Keep trying. As I recall I got a live person after pressing * to three prompts.

Another splendid way is www.gethuman.com . The list is updated fairly frequently, too. One of my coworkers has had a serious issue on a vehicle he purchased and this got him directly to someone who was able to act on his RCOB issue regarding an engine failure after it was serviced.

Rabbit.

True story. Ask PDB, I was talking to him the whole time.

So my computer died the day after Christmas. Not the end of the world, I was planning to do an upgrade this year anyway but not quite so soon. I ordered $300 of parts from NewEgg and paid the extra $18 to have it overnighted so I wouldn't have to... shudder... watch the television. I have them ship it to the office so I can sign for it there and be sure to get it. In the past overnight packages have arrived at 11:00 or so at the office.

The tracking page says that it's been "out for delivery" since 6:52 AM. So I work and wait... lunchtime blows right by. Pretty soon it's 4:30 and everyone but me goes home. I'd actually been told I could leave at 1:30, but stayed so I could get my package.

At 5:00 I check the tracking page again. 13 minutes earlier the driver had updated the status to read "CUSTOMER'S OFFICE NOT OPEN TO ACCEPT PACKAGE, WILL ATTEMPT SECOND DELIVERY TOMORROW."

Let me draw you a picture: I had turned on all the lights to the church, parked my car by the front door, and propped the front doors to the building open. What about that picture made him think that nobody was home, especially considering that this was an overnight package?

I was... displeased. I was about to get my package delayed for who knows how long, I'd waited three extra hours for a package that I wasn't going to get, and on top of that I wouldn't get a refund on my $18, because I "wasn't there."

So I call the telephone number above, press 0 twice, and immediately get a pickup from a human. Awesome. They're very helpful, and say they will call the local center, who will contact the driver and tell him to come back.

15 minutes later, the truck creeeeeeps into the parking lot. I go outside and wait on the sidewalk so as to take as little time for the guy as possible. He puts the truck in park, steps down, thrusts the pad at me to sign, then climbs back up and into the back. He comes back to the door, and *tosses* the package about 5 feet from the top of his steps to my arms as I stood on the sidewalk. "Have a nice night, I guess." was all I could think of to say, but he didn't say a word as he put the truck in drive and drove off.

I hated to whine, but the guy was dishonest about ever stopping by in the first place, then treated me like I was wasting his time with my premium rush-delivery package. I called the number again, immediately got another human, and filed a complaint.

For both calls the CSRs were EXTREMELY helpful and apologetic. The fact that they at least acted thoughtful and concerned was all that kept the incident from completely ruining my opinion of the company.

But now I'm wondering how many of the packages to my office in the future are going to have "accidents" in that final stage of transit...
