Word of the Day > Word of the Day: Eggcorn

Gary Martin:

Eggcorns are words or phrases which have been coined mistakenly, often due to an incorrect guess as to how a word is spelled, but one which makes some kind of sense. For example, Old-Timer's Disease for Alzheimer's Disease and daring-do for derring-do.

That's from his explanation of chaise lounge, which is an eggcorn of the French chaise longue (long chair).

Two seconds of Googling produced The Eggcorn Database. I liked Cadillac Converter. "Reductio and absurdum" would be a good name for a clown act.

I once peeked into the women's shower. My interest was piqued. And something else peaked, too.
