East Tennessee > Trolleys to Smokies' Synchronous Fireflies Next Two Weekends

Knoxville News-Sentinel - Viewing of fireflies begins this weekend in Smokies:

Synchronous fireflies are beginning their mating season near Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. According to the Smokies Web site, the fireflies don't always flash in unison. They may flash in waves across hillsides, and at other times will flash randomly.

Watching them has become such a big deal that Gatlinburg will send its trolleys and those will be the only vehicles allowed past the Sugarlands Visitor Center, except for people camping at the Elkmont campground. The restrictions begin Saturday and last through June 14.
