> I Knew It: People with Lots of Bumper Stickers are Crazy

or at least aggressive:

Watch out for cars with bumper stickers. That's the surprising conclusion of a recent study by Colorado State University social psychologist William Szlemko. Drivers of cars with bumper stickers, window decals, personalized license plates and other "territorial markers" not only get mad when someone cuts in their lane or is slow to respond to a changed traffic light, but they are far more likely than those who do not personalize their cars to use their vehicles to express rage -- by honking, tailgating and other aggressive behavior.

It does not seem to matter whether the messages on the stickers are about peace and love -- "Visualize World Peace," "My Kid Is an Honor Student" -- or angry and in your face -- "Don't Mess With Texas," "My Kid Beat Up Your Honor Student."

...Drivers who do not personalize their cars get angry, too, Szlemko and his colleagues concluded in a paper they recently published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, but they don't act out their anger. They fume, mentally call the other driver a jerk, and move on.

"The more markers a car has, the more aggressively the person tends to drive when provoked," Szlemko said. "Just the presence of territory markers predicts the tendency to be an aggressive driver."

I've always figured that if someone's bumper is plastered with stickers I don't want to know them. Now Science! tells me I was right.

I haven't gotten into a car accident since I started driving a car with no bumper stickers on it.

Coincidence? I think not.

(I was one of *those* drivers, too - the ones who tailgait and flash brights and general act like a surly bitch just because someone cuts me off - I'm really lucky to be alive, honestly.)

If you read the experiment procedure, it's hard to consider the conclusiongs very valid. Their measure of how 'aggresive' a drive was is to drive up to a red light in the turning lane, and then when it turned green just sit their and time how long it took the person behind them to honk.

I'm not sure how merely honking at someone while stopped at a light qualifies as agressive driving. Particularly compared to someone deliberately blocking traffic because they feel entitled to do so for the sake of their experiment.

Fess up, Stormy. How many bumperstickers do you have? :-)

None, because I don't want to damage my paint, but I do have a Penn State magnet
