Photos > UT Non-Credit Photography Class Schedule Announced

Email from Tom Geisler:

Starting tomorrow, July 31, you can call in 974-0150, and register for any course you would like for the fall 08 semester. You won’t be able to register on-line for a couple more days, I am told. So if you want one of the ‘sell out quickly’ classes such as photoshop, I suggest you act quickly. I will be doing two separate sessions of the F-2 class if you may be interested. I am listing all of the courses below as they will appear in the catalog. The catalogs should be in the mail any day.

I highly recommend Tom's Fundamentals of Digital Photography. Contemporary Art Photography, Nature and Travel Photography, and Photoshop for Photographers look interesting, and the the instructors seem well-qualified. Though not my thing, the Lighting Essentials and Sports Photography classes look good, also.

The instructor for next term's Photoshop class is "Larry Perry, certified Adobe instructor, prize-winning wildlife photographer, popular Photoshop seminar leader, and author of five books on digital image enhancement." Boy do I wish I had taken that class from him. Instead I took it from an instructor who shall go unnamed. I haven't mentioned this before because I'm such a cheery ray of effin' sunshine, but his class was awful. I didn't learn squat and neither did my friends in the class with whom I commiserated afterwards.

Complete schedule after the jump (I haven't bothered to fix the email formatting).

Contemporary Art Photography

Even though photographers will be inspired by some of the thought-provoking work, this class is not restricted to photographers.

The emphasis of Contemporary Art Photography is recognizing

these directions, or themes, and making connections among

different artists—living and dead—who contributed to contemporary

photography. How does James Casebere’s small-scale models

of buildings relate to the large-scale productions of Jeff Wall? How

does Thomas Struth’s photographs of dense forests have their

ideological roots in Ansel Adam’s images of Yosemite? Does the

very nature of photographs prompt certain themes? Anyone who

enjoys art or wants to understand more about art will benefit. A

small materials fee for handouts is due to the instructor at the first

class. Optional text: The Photograph as Contemporary Art. Instructor:

Paula Campbell, M.F.A., studio art; B.F.A., painting/drawing; minor

Photoshopping a Wedding

Now that you’ve shot the wedding, what are you going to do with

the photos? Do you have photos that didn’t quite come out the way

you had intended? Is the color balanced? Is the light right? Will

cropping make it better? If you want to add a creative touch your

photos, design beautiful album collages or even do something as

simple as have part of the photo in B&W and part in

color, then you’ll enjoy this class. Want to create a Web album to

show those photos to friends…then Photoshopping a Wedding is

for you. In this class you’ll learn how to edit and correct shooting

problems, design collages, become creative with your photos, and

how to use action scripts to speed up your editing. Please bring a

Photoshop Lightroom New

If you are a digital photographer whose experience level is

anywhere from beginner to professional, you need this course.

Photoshop Lightroom software from Adobe is an integrated

program for organizing, adjusting, and presenting your digital

photographs. It is for photographers who don’t need all the

complex features and the steep learning curve of Photoshop, but

still want to produce outstanding quality in their photos. Lightroom

is much easier to learn and use than Photoshop. It is for

photographers who want to work very quickly with most of their

images, while retaining the ability to use Photoshop on specific

images if needed. It is also for experienced Photoshop users

who need a far more efficient way to process large numbers of

image files. Whether you are a novice or a professional, Lightroom

will let you spend less time with your computer and more

time enjoying photography. This course will show you how.

Students should have the Lightroom software on their personal

computer so they can build a catalog of their own photographs

as they progress through the course. Basic computer skills will

be required. Instructor: Brad Cottrell. Brad has managed a successful

professional photography business for the past five years,

producing and marketing fine art prints while extensively studying

digital asset management (DAM ) theory which he uses to organize

and catalog his own image files.
