October 01, 2004October 06, 2004Optical Illusion
This is non-dancing baloney that just looks like it's dancing. The motion is an illusion. The more you move your focus, the more it seems to move. Focus on any part of the image for a few seconds and it stops. It works with printouts, too. If you have trouble seeing the motion, try this larger version.

Sera: "Look! Milton from Office Space made a Tron uniform." Chris: "<miltonvoice>I was told I could wear my Tron uniform at work from nine to eleven</miltonvoice>." Me: "<comicbookguyvoice>Would you please remove your non-period-correct eyeglasses? You're ruining my sci-fi convention experience</comicbookguyvoice>."

August 16, 2005The Checker-shadow IllusionFound at Willisms, who in turn found it at Marginal Revolutions.
I really couldn't believe squares A and B were the same color. Will convinced himself of it by using Photoshop's eyedropper to sample the colors. I decided to remove the squares from the surrounding picture. Here they are with the adjacent squares:
They still looked like different colors to me, so I took out the surrounding squares. Now I can finally see that they're the same color. That is one heck of an illusion.

No, really. It's safe for work and everything. Continue reading "Not What You Think It Is" »June 23, 2006Friday Bird Blogging - Pileated WoodpeckersTaken near the horse stables in Cades Cove during last weekend's trip to the Smokies. I went to look for a wild turkey I glimpsed and found these pileated woodpeckers foraging for woodpecker vittles. Near the end of the video you can see one bird feeding the other behind the tree. This next is a short video of one of the birds pecking at a log. P.S. I think these are young pileateds. They seem a little small. Compare them to the mature birds at Pileated Woodpecker Central. The crest on these birds is more of a teardrop shape. On the older birds it's narrower and more angular. July 10, 2006YouTube Videos Tagged with "Knoxville"Lots of good stuff on YouTube. August 18, 2006Would Work Best with Long DrivewayThat picture has something I'll never have in my life. A tidy garage. October 31, 2006More About "Convoy"After this post I was listening to "Convoy" and wasn't sure what Shakytown was, and I kind of wondered since Jackson Brown has a song by that name. That lead to the "Convoy" Wikipedia entry. I didn't realize "Convoy" was telling a story about a truck driver revolution. A disjointed, shaggy dog story, but a story all the same. November 27, 2006November 28, 2006Girl in Bathtub with CheetosI noticed the Dancing Baloney category was a little thin, so I'm adding this oldie but goodie. I used to have a link for ordering prints. If you know where to find them, post in comments.
November 30, 2006"Tennessee Trash" PSAVia Chez Bez. This is a cult favorite from the '70s. "Tennessee Trash" was an anti-litter PSA featuring an awesome song sung by Ed Bruce. It starred a dirty guy in a wifebeater who drove down the highway in a convertible gleefully throwing trash on the road. This is the version that was re-released in 1998. Didn't the original end with a voiceover that said "We have met the enemy, and he is us"?
