Instapundit:

I’M SHOCKED, SHOCKED TO FIND THAT Charles Rangel has undisclosed assets. “House Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel, already beset by a series of ethics investigations, has disclosed more than $500,000 in previously unreported assets. Among the new items on Rangel’s amended 2007 financial disclosure report were an account at the Congressional Federal Credit Union worth at least $250,000, an investment account with at least $250,000, land in southern New Jersey and stock in PepsiCo and fast food conglomerate Yum! Brands. None of those investments appeared on the original report, which was filled out by hand and filed in May 2008.”

UPDATE: The real total in previously-undisclosed assets is probably over $1 million:

In 2004, for instance, Rangel reported earning between $4,000 and $10,000 in outside earnings on top of his $158,100 congressional salary. But the amended filings show that after the sale of a property on West 132nd Street, his outside income that year was somewhere between $118,000 and $1.04 million.

The Post revealed yesterday that Rangel is in arrears on New Jersey property taxes — for property that for more than 15 years he failed to disclose to Congress and the public.

NOLA.com - William Jefferson verdict: Guilty on 11 of 16 counts:

Former Democratic Congressman William Jefferson was found guilty of 11 of 16 corruption charges today by a federal jury. The jury of eight women and four men returned a guilty verdict following five days of deliberation.

In the 16-count indictment, Jefferson was charged with soliciting bribes and other crimes for a series of schemes in which he helped American businesses broker deals in West African in exchange for payments or financial considerations to companies controlled by members of his family, including his brother Mose, his wife, Andrea, their five daughters and a son-in-law.

Jefferson, 62, who represented the New Orleans-based 2nd Congressional District for nine terms, will now face sentencing by Judge T.S. Ellis III, who earlier meted out stiff sentences for lesser figures in the case. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Jefferson faced 235 years in prison if convicted on all counts, and will still face substantial prison time.

Tax Problems Surface for Trade Rep. Nominee Kirk:

Kirk’s tax problems, according to the committee, were largely based on his failure to pay taxes on honoraria that he earned from speaking. He had not paid taxes on the income because he had asked that the fees be diverted to his alma mater, Austin College, to fulfill a pledge to a scholarship fund.

The committee said he also deducted too much from his taxes from the purchase of season tickets to NBA Mavericks games. And it said he incorrectly apportioned accounting fees between his partnership forms and his personal income tax forms.

Kirk also overstated the value of a television he donated, valuing it at $3,000 instead of $1,500, the committee found. And he did not have an acknowledgment letter for a $900 donation.

From The Corner:

The current omnibus bill under debate today in the House is large and contains many objectionable items. But the most objectionable items may well be the earmarks that will go to clients of the PMA lobbying group. PMA, which could become the Democrats’ version of the Jack Abramoff scandal, will close its doors next month in the wake of a November FBI raid on its offices.

As Tory Newmyer was reporting in Roll Call as early as 2007, the firm and its clients have contributed big money to certain Democrats in Congress and then they have in turn received even bigger earmarks.

Unfortunately, the publicity surrounding this firm did not prevent some of the same Democrats who took large amounts of PMA money from inserting at least eight PMA earmarks into the current stimulus bill. Rep. Jeff Flake (R, Ariz.) identified these eight earlier this week:

● NuVant Systems, Inc. – Direct Methanol Fuel Cell - $951,500
● PPG, Inc. – Solar Energy Windows and Smart IR Switchable Building Technologies - $1,189,375
● Alpha Micron, Inc. – Adaptive Liquid Crystal Windows - $951,500
● Quallion - Anti-idling Lithium Ion Battery Program –$951,500
● Parametric Technology Corp. - Advanced Engineering Environment for Sandia National Lab - $1,427,250
● Parametric Technology Corp. – Multi-Disciplined Integrated Collaborative Environment (MDICE) - $951,500
● Intelligent Optical Systems, Inc. - Hydrogen Optical Fiber Sensors - $951,500
● Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Inc. - CATALYST: Explorations in Aerospace and Innovation Education Program - $400,000

Didn’t file tax returns for eight of the last nine years, the last three of which he was on probation for tax offenses including not filing his tax returns. Rumor has it he’s on Obama’s short list for drug czar, tax evasion czar, and supergenius czar.

Obama, Daschle and those Wall Street fatcats

Financial Times - Obama slams Wall Street over bonuses:

President Barack Obama lashed out on Thursday at “shameful” Wall Street executives for claiming billions of dollars in bonuses while their stricken institutions asked taxpayers for support.

Now former Democratic Senator Tom Daschle, Obama’s pick for Housing and Human Services secretary, is in hot water:

It seems Tom Daschle recently paid a little over $100,000 in back taxes and interest after failing to tell the IRS that he was receiving a free car and driver from a Wall Street friend for three years. If you’re keeping track, that’s a little over twice the amount Tim Geithner paid in back taxes and interest.

Powerline:

As a life-long politician, Tom Daschle never earned much money. But he retired from the Senate, after being defeated for re-election by John Thune, as a multimillionaire. He retired to Georgetown, of course, not to South Dakota. This happens a lot in Washington, and Daschle’s case is pretty typical.

His wife Linda is or was a lobbyist, and she was the one who reported the family’s income. (This is inference, since Daschle consistently chose not to make his tax returns public.) Linda Daschle made millions “lobbying” on behalf of various corporate interests. There was no conflict of interest, the Democrats assured us, because Linda Daschle only “lobbied” the House of Representatives, not the Senate, where her husband was either the Majority or the Minority Leader for much of his career.

But wait! If a company hired Linda to lobby House members, the check they wrote went straight into the Senate Majority Leader’s joint checking account. It would have been a felony to write the check to Tom in exchange for political services, but a check to Linda, that went into the same bank account? No problem! She wasn’t lobbying the Senate! So Tom Daschle became a multimillionaire.

Is Tom Daschle a crook, or is it fairer to think of him as a low-level tool of various big-time crooks who play the Washington game by the corrupt rules of the Democratic Party? Either way, it is hard to think of a worse person to put in charge of “reforming” the nation’s health care system.

Yep. If you put government in charge of healthcare you put politicians, unions, and corporations and their lobbyists in charge of healthcare. Because the government is the government they can force you into the system whether you like it or not.

NBC4i - Ex-Member Of Strickland’s Staff Arrested:

DUBLIN, Ohio—Columbus police have charged a former member of Governor Ted Strickland’s staff with seven felonies, involving a prostitution ring.

Democrat Eric McFadden, who until October of 2007 was head of Strickland’s Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, was arrested Wednesday morning in Dublin. Police said they believe McFadden was “Toby,“ the man they have been looking for during the past two months after busting up a prostitution ring that was operated on Craig’s List.

An employee of the OSU School of Nursing and an employee of the Franklin County Children Services was arrested at that time. McFadden was being charged with seven felonies, including pandering obscenities involving a minor, promoting prostitution and compelling prostitution. Police said the number of charges could rise to 15.

Obama’s Treasury Secretary nominee is an income tax cheat

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 | Politics | Permalink | 3 Comments |

Michelle Malkin:

President-elect Barack Obama’s choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed to senators Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication in an otherwise smooth path to confirmation.

Timothy Geithner paid most of the past-due taxes days before Obama announced his nomination in November, an Obama transition official said. The unpaid taxes were discovered by Obama’s transition team while investigating Geithner’s background, the official said.

Transition officials discovered last fall that Geithner also had not paid the taxes in 2001 or 2002. He paid $25,970 in taxes and interest for those years several days before Obama announced his nomination, the transition official said.

Geithner also didn’t realize a housekeeper he paid in 2004 and 2005 did not have current employment documentation as an immigrant for the final three months she worked for him, the transition official said.

As Leona Hemsley said, only the little people pay taxes. Not big people like the secretary of the department of the U.S. government that collects taxes.
